If you are not familiar with what a ringtone is, here is a brief description:

A ringtone is a sound that plays to alert you to an incoming call. Traditional phones have standard rings, but because mobile phones are all electronic they have always been able to play special "tunes" to indicate incoming phone calls. Old phones just used bells, so there really was no option for variety.

Ringtones first appears in 1998 (that means they are coming up on their 10 year birthday!) The first ringtones were very basic. They consisted of essentially electronic beeps played in sequence. This is what is known as a polyphonic ringtone. More recently real audio files have been converted into ring tones. As newer and better phones come to market, such as the iPhone, the older beey polyphonic tones have practically vanished in favor of fancier and better sounding songs.
